NXP to Expand 8-inch Wafer Capacity at SSMC

In order to strengthen its footprint in Asia, NXP Semiconductors announced that it will invest $125 million SGD (US$100 million; US$1=$1.243 SGD) to upgrade the capacity of SSMC (Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company), a semiconductor foundry co-founded by NXP and Taiwan-based TSMC in 2000 in Singapore, according to Taiwan's Commercial Times on October 15. Currently, SSMC's mainstream process technologies are based on 0.14 mm to 0.11 mm. The expansion plan aims to boost SSMC's monthly capacity to 57,000 units by the end of 2014. Meanwhile, the company will also set up a global standard product headquarters, a global operation center, and a Southeast Asia sales and marketing center in Singapore.
